Are cupping marks normal? Aftercare tips

    Dr. Khedup · 2026-09-23

Yes. Round marks after cupping are normal. Zang-Bum, the Tibetan form of cupping, uses suction to lift the skin and the tissue under it. Where the cups sat, the skin can look red, purple or brown for a few days. The marks are not bruises from impact, they are not usually painful, and they fade on their own.

How dark they are varies. A tight, overworked back often marks more than a relaxed one. Fair skin can show marks more clearly. They commonly last three to seven days. If a mark is still sore, blistered or spreading after several days, contact us and your doctor.

After the session, drink water and keep the area covered if you are going out in strong sun or dust. Skip a hot sauna, a long hot bath and intense exercise for the rest of the day. Do not scrub the marks. A gentle wash is enough. You can return to normal movement, including sitting at a desk, the same day.

Tell us before cupping if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, have very thin or broken skin, or have a fever. We will not cup over wounds, rashes or fresh injuries. Cupping is one tool for muscle pain and stiffness. It does not treat infections, fractures or conditions that need urgent medical care.

During the session you will feel a pulling sensation as each cup is seated, then warmth. Cups may stay in place or be moved slowly over oiled skin, which feels like a deep glide. Tell us if any cup is too strong. We can release it immediately. A session is often 20 to 60 minutes, focused on the back, shoulders or the area you came in for.

Marks are the main reason people hesitate. Plan cupping for a week when your shoulders will be covered if that matters to you, or ask for cups only on the mid and lower back. Massage without cupping — Ku-Nye, deep tissue or hot compress — is available when you want the muscle work and no marks at all. Both are used for the same kinds of desk and travel pain.

People in Delhi book Zang-Bum for back pain, stiff necks and shoulders, and the heavy feeling after long travel or desk work. If you have an event and do not want visible marks on the shoulders, say so and we can place cups where clothing covers them, or choose a massage without cupping.
