Back pain and sciatica: when massage helps, and when to see a doctor

    Dr. Khedup · 2026-09-23

Back pain is the most common reason people book at our Majnu Ka Tilla clinic. Much of it comes from desk work, lifting, long rides and tight muscles. Sciatica is different in one important way: the pain travels from the lower back into the buttock and down the leg, because a nerve is irritated. Massage can ease both, and it is not the right first step for every case.

Go to a hospital or your doctor urgently if back or leg pain comes with sudden leg weakness, numbness in the groin, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, unexplained weight loss, or pain after a fall or accident. Those are not massage problems. We will turn a booking away and say so if what you describe sounds like an emergency.

When the pain is muscular, or nerve pain that your doctor has already assessed, hands-on care can reduce guarding and help you sit, walk and sleep more comfortably. For the back we use focused back massage, Ku-Nye, hot compress and cupping. For sciatica we work on the lower back, hip and the muscles that can press on the nerve, and we may add acupuncture. Pressure stays within what you can tolerate.

One session sometimes takes the edge off a recent strain. Pain that has lasted months usually needs a short course, plus small changes in how you sit and move. We will not promise a cure, and we will not ask you to stop medicines another doctor has prescribed. Tell us about scans, disc problems and any numbness so the plan matches your back.

Between visits, small changes matter as much as the massage. Raise the screen so you are not looking down, stand up every hour, and avoid sitting on a wallet or a twisted foot. A short walk is usually better than full rest, unless a doctor has told you to rest. Ice is for a new swollen injury. Heat is for a stiff, old ache. If you are unsure, ask us before you book and we will say which one.

If you are unsure which page to book from, message us with where the pain is and whether it travels down the leg. We will point you to back pain care or sciatica care, and suggest a first session length. Bring any MRI or X-ray report if you have one, especially for a disc or cervical problem. Neck pain that runs into the arm is assessed separately from ordinary shoulder tightness.
